Exocar Era: $5,000 Mazda 6 Exocar in South Dakota

This is one of the craziest exocars I’ve ever seen, not because of its performance, but because of what it used to be.

The description says it all:

Fun car to drive! It’s like driving an oversized go-cart. Automatic w/ sport shift mode. 155k miles on it. It has a clean title. Good tires, radio, heat, steering controls all work. Located in Sioux Falls.

The ad doesn’t say, but the engine appears to be the base 2.3-liter four-cylinder with 160 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. Not staggering numbers to be sure, but a stock 2005 Mazda 6 barely weighs over 3,100 pounds, meaning that even with a full interior this exocar probably weighs 2500-2750 pounds all in.

What’s more, so many exocars look like they were stripped down by three blindfolded men with Sawzalls, but with this one there seems to have been some good attention to detail. Note the reinforcements around the seatbelt anchors and the general lack of brokeness happening around the rear wheel wells. Not too shabby.

I don’t think that cage is going to do a whole lot in the event of a rollover besides look cool, and if a rear wing doesn’t help the performance of a DF Goblin I doubt it helps here either, but there I go being serious again. This is a Mazda 6 exocar! And you know what? This is basically a front-engined, front-wheel drive DF Goblin for less than a quarter of the price.

Anyone fancy a race?
